“The Past Is Still Alive” is the upcoming ninth studio album by Hurray for the Riff Raff, set to be released on February 23, 2024, through Nonesuch Records. The album is a deeply personal project, created by Alynda Segarra during a period of grief following the loss of their father. Segarra found inspiration in various sources, including radical poetry, railroad culture, outsider art, the work of writer Eileen Myles, and activist groups like ACT UP and Gran Fury.

The album features a diverse range of themes, including love, loss, and the heartbroken and hopeful parts of Segarra’s life. It explores vivid experiences from small shops in Santa Fe to childhood road trips and Florida storms, struggles of addiction in the Lower East Side, and days-long journeys to outrun the cops in Nebraska.
“The Past Is Still Alive” features collaborations with Anjimile, Conor Oberst, and S.G. Goodman, and was produced by Brad Cook, who also mixed the album, and mastered by Heba Kadry. The album represents a new beginning in Segarra’s evolution as a storyteller, and it is both a memoir and a roadmap of their life so far.
Hurray for the Riff Raff will embark on a headline tour of the US and Europe from February through May to promote the album.
